The holiday weekend got off to a tragic start on Friday evening when a
boat accident in New York harbor killed one person and seriously injured two others.
New York City Police say that 39-year-old Richard Aquilone failed a sobriety test after the accident took place and has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and endangering a child.
The
NYC boat accident took place at around 6:30, when Aquilone’s 30-foot boat slammed into a 19-foot boat carrying three 30-year-olds. The smaller boat, which was near the Statue of Liberty, was smashed to pieces. One man, Jijo Punthuyamkunnath, died at the hospital after authorities extracted the man from the remains of the boat.
The driver of the larger boat had a 35-year-old woman and three toddlers aboard his boat. He has said that the fatal New York boat accident was caused by the wake from a larger commercial sight-seeing boat.
