More than 2,000 children under the age of 5 are injured annually and around 100 die annually when cars back over them. When small children (or pets, or objects, for that matter) are in the blindspots of car mirrors, they are in danger of being injured or hurt when a car backs up. The danger can be eliminated or at least greatly reduced with backup camera systems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calculates almost 300 deaths and 20,000 injuries each year are caused by back-over car accidents. Rearview Cameras
On cars with backup camera systems, it helps eliminate the blind spot behind the vehicle. Most sedans have a blind spot of about 12 feet out from the bumper while SUVs can be as much as 14 feet. Pickup trucks have a blind spot of as much as 30 feet. With the cameras installed on the back of vehicles, drivers can view what's directly behind them in a video display in the dash – similar to checking the rearview mirror.
All cars will be required to have backup camera systems by September of 2014, although many car makers, like Ford, are installing rear-view cameras before then. If you want a rear view camera system for your car, but don't want to buy a new car yet – you can purchase just the camera and video monitor for around $70 on Amazon.com.
New cars that are sold with backup camera systems already installed may have slightly higher price tags, but as car accident statistics are monitored and it's found that accidents are reduced as a result of the equipment – your car insurance premiums will likely decrease to offset the slightly higher price tag. Help reduce your risks for a car accident when backing up with a rearview camera system. Not only will you eliminate the need for a car accident attorney, but you could save the life of a child or other individual who happens to be in your vehicle's blind spot when you try to back up.
