Construction Injuries: Herniated Disc

The spine is a series of bones (vertebrae) that run from the neck down to the lower back. It's purpose is to protect the spinal cord from being damaged, and helps with mobility. Each vertebrae is connected with a disc and two small joints. The discs contain a gel-like material and water in the center, which helps absorb shock between the vertebrae as people move or bend.

Over time or from trauma and injury, a disc deteriorates and may rupture or displace the center of the disc - this is called a herniated disc. Herniated discs press on nerves in the spinal cord, which can cause inflammation, which in turn can cause pain, weakness, tingling or numbness in many areas of the body from the neck, shoulders, legs, back, feet, or arms.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Physical symptoms of a herniated disc vary, depending where the disc is ruptured in the body. Common herniated disc symptoms include:

  • instant and severe neck pain, leg pain, back pain, shoulder pain - often followed by constant discomfort and pain
  • Numbness or pins and needle type feeling in extremeties
  • Muscle weakness
  • Bladder or bowel incontinence

New York Construction Injuries Involving Herniated Discs

Unfortunately, many New York construction workers experience herniated discs from construction accidents and injuries. If these accidents were due to negligence or intentional acts, a New York personal injury lawyer or NY construction attorney can help you determine your legal options for obtaining either workers' compensation or personal injury compensation. Herniated disc injuries in the neck or back can result into tens of thousands or more in medical expenses, and some construction workers are never able to return to work after a herniated disc injury.
