Two women were crossing a street on the Upper West Side of New York City when they were struck by a SUV. The 38 year old driver of a 2008 Ford Explorer was backing into a paring spot on Amsterdam Avenue near West 98th Street when the SUV struck both of the women, killing one.
Yolanda Casal, 78, died from injuries sustained in the accident and was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital.. The other pedestrian, a 41 year old woman was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. The crash was hard enough to cause a dent in the back of the sport utility vehicle. Reports at the scene noted the fatality victim was found lying on the ground with blood exiting her ears and nose.
The driver of the SUV was arrested by city police and criminal charges are currently pending for the accident. Police have charged Edwin Carrasco with multiple charges including driving on a suspended license, unsafe backing, and failure to exercise due care.
Fatal accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles are common in the city and around the nation. Summer is an especially eventful time for such accidents to occur as more pedestrians and cyclists are on the roads. With the increased amount of distracted driving and reliance on auto technology, drivers and pedestrians are at greater risk for such accidents and fatalities.
