Brooklyn Pedestrian Dies In Church Parking Lot; Elderly Driver Blamed

Posted on Mar 30, 2010

Tragedy struck a Brooklyn church this weekend when an elderly man accidentally backed into a group of churchgoers killing one person and injuring four others. The deadly pedestrian accident was one of three reported that weekend in Kings County.

NY police reported that the fatal Brooklyn pedestrian accident took place on Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of Pyeong Ahn Presbyterian Church at 2407 McDonald Avenue in Gravesend. Just before 3 pm, as weekend church activities were taking place, a 72-year-old man driving a 2010 Mercedes dropped someone off at the church and then began to back up his vehicle. The car suddenly accelerated backwards at a high speed, striking three middle-aged women and two children.

After hitting the crowd of people, the car then backed into a fence and a church van at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe that the Brooklyn car accident was a simple mistake made by the driver. Several other people jumped out of the way of the runaway vehicle. The man driving the car stayed at the scene as emergency workers arrived.

The NYC car accident killed 40-year-old Sung Won Cho of Brooklyn and also injured a one-year-old boy, a ten-year-old girl, a 36-year-old woman, and a 41-year-old woman. All of the injured churchgoers were transferred to Lutheran Medical Center where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe the elderly man driving the car may have accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
