In a tunnel below Lake Ontario, Southland Contracting works on a construction site creating the future location for East Side Water Supply Project. The completed project will allow 50 million gallons of water to be treated daily from Lake Ontario. The tunnel is about 163 feet below the surface of the ground, and connects an inland shaft on lake Road to one in Lake Ontario. The tunnel is drilled by a machine that can bore through the elements found under the lake, including soil, rock, and mud. The machine then gathers the materials and dumps them into rail cars to be transported out of the tunnel.
A train moving through the tunnel carrying drilling debris struck and killed a construction employee in the deadly NY construction accident. Emergency personnel were called to the scene at 10:30 on Monday morning, the man was pronounced dead, but he has not yet been identified.
Work on the construction site has stopped while OSHA investigates to determine whether the site has unsafe work conditions or not. When the construction accident took place, there were four other employees in the tunnel but no one else got hurt.
