Construction Site Crane Accident at World Trade Center

Posted on Feb 21, 2012

On February 17th, around 10am, about 38,000 pounds of steel fell 40 stories to the ground at the site of the World Trade Center.  Miraculously, no one was injured in the construction accident.  A crane cable holding the three 62-foot long steel beams broke, and the beams crashed to the ground, crushing a flatbed truck underneath.  No one was in the truck at the time.  While this is not the first construction accident to occur at the site of where the buildings destroyed during the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks are being rebuilt, it is certainly among the most significant for potential danger.
One construction worker was evaluated at the scene by medical workers and released.  The area of the construction accident is closed to the public.  A spokesman for Tishman Construction, the contractor at 4 World Trade Center, said the company would investigate the cause of the accident and cooperate with the Port Authority and NYC agencies.
Unsafe crane operations have been reported at the site previously, with city building records showing a fine of $4,800 being paid in May 2009 and work stopping until the working conditions were made safe again.
