Weeks after a fatal bus accident on a highway in the Bronx killed 15 people and seriously injured others, the National Traffic Safety Board has announced that it will launch an investigation into the commercial bus industry as a whole. The investigation will focus on the low-cost tour bus industry and the current regulations related to the industry. The bus involved in the March 12 crash was shuttling passengers between Manhattan and a gambling facility in Connecticut.
When the New York Department of Transportation inspected 14 buses shortly after the accident in March, it found one violation or another in every single case. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has asked that a number of state departments and organizations, including the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Transportation, and the NY Police Department all crack down on commercial bus licensing, commercial bus citations, and commercial bus violations.
At the same time, the investigation into the Bronx bus accident continues, with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration revealing that the bus company that could be responsible for the accident was involved in two other similar bus accidents in the past three years. In addition, the bus company, World Wide Travel, has been cited for using fatigued drivers five times in the past year.
The investigation will be headed by United States Senator Charles Schumer of New York and United States Representative Nydia Velazquez of Ridgewood, New York.
