After settling a wrongful death lawsuit with the victim’s family earlier this year, former New York Yankee Jim Leyritz is now on trial for DUI manslaughter following a deadly car accident in 2007.
According to court records, 46-year-old Leyritz was driving home after dropping off a friend at around three in the morning when he allegedly ran a red light and slammed into the car of 30-year-old mother Freida Veitch. Veitch died of her car accident injuries.
After the accident, police found that Leyritz had a blood alcohol content of 0.14, almost twice the legal limit. In addition, two witnesses said that the embattled former ball player ran the red light at the intersection immediately before the fatal collision. Finally, he failed several sobriety tests after the crash.
Jurors will probably not hear that Veitch was also drunk at the time of the accident and had a blood alcohol level of 0.18. In addition, Veitch may have been talking on her cell phone and was not wearing her seat belt. One witness believes that Veitch did not have her headlights on at the time of the crash.
In court, Leyritz’s car accident attorneys plan on arguing that the light was yellow at the time of the accident.
Leyritz has been in the news several times after retiring from the Yankees after winning two World Series. One incident involved alcohol and bail violations, while the other involved an attempted suicide.
