Five individuals have filed a class action lawsuit against the popular online dating website Match.com this month. In the lawsuit, the former customers claim that the web-based personals company uses a number of deceptive practices, including:
• Falsely representing that their website has millions of active single users looking for love – when in fact a large percentage of profiles belong to inactive users and scammers.
• Falsely claiming that their employees vet profiles before they appear on the site in order to prevent scammers and fake users from posting on the site.
• Misrepresents the gender ratio on the site by counting fake female profiles as real and active users – in reality, the site has significantly more male participants.
Perhaps the most troubling practice that Match.com is accused of in the class action consumer fraud lawsuit has to do possible deceptive practices regarding membership renewals. According to one former customer, the online dating service may mislead their members into believing that they have new contact with a single right before their membership expires. In the days before their membership ends, some say, they receive a “wink” from another profile – a sign that someone is interesting in establishing a conversation or relationship. This wink convinces many members to pay for a continuing membership and explore this new possibility; however, when the user responds to the “wink,” they often find that it is from an inactive users or a user who no longer exists.
Those who are involved in the Match.com deceptive practices class action lawsuit are asking for compensation for membership fees paid and other damages.
