Match.com To Screen For Sex Offenders After Lawsuit Filed

Posted on May 16, 2011

Just weeks after online dating customers filed a class action lawsuit against Match.com, the internet dating giant has announced that they will begin screening for sex offenders before approving user profiles.

The change in the online dating company came after one user filed a lawsuit against the company claiming that she was raped by someone she met on the site. The woman later found out that the man who sexually assaulted her had a long criminal past, including six different convictions for sexual battery.

President of Match.com, Mandy Ginsberg, says that the screening involves the national sex offender registry, and that while she hopes that the new screening process will make the site safer, it will not be perfect. According to the Associated Press, Ginsberg stressed that the checks for potentially dangerous dates was still flawed and that those who use the site should still be cautious when meeting new people and dating those who they meet on the site.

Some have questioned whether the screening process is legal, while others question whether Match.com users will now have a false sense of security when communicating with stranger on the site or meeting them in person.

It is unclear whether other large dating sites will implement similar screening processes.
