Medical Malpractice Juror Arrested For Allegedly Soliciting Bribes

Posted on May 31, 2011

A New York juror is under arrest after he allegedly tried to solicit bribes while serving on a medical malpractice jury. According to the Associated Press, 53-year-old Deonarine Persaud of Long Beach, New York, has been charged with felony bribe receiving and misdemeanor juror misconduct – two crimes that could lead to up to five years in prison.

The plaintiff’s parents say that Persuad called their home after jury selection and said that he had important information to share about the defended – but did not share that he was a sworn juror in the case. He met the Plaintiff’s father in a local Home Depot, where he offered to sway the other jurors in favor of the plaintiff – as long as he could have 5 percent of the compensation.

The plaintiff’s lawyer was informed of the bribe attempt and informed the judge on Monday morning. The juror was arrested when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

“Juror misconduct undermines the constitutional rights of plaintiffs and defendants and threatens the sanctity of our justice system,” Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said.

News sources and prosecutors have not disclosed either the name of the plaintiff or the name of the attorneys involved in the New York medical malpractice case.
