Medical Mistake Leave Brooklyn Woman A Double Amputee

Posted on Dec 31, 2010

A Brooklyn mother is suing a hospital for medical malpractice after an outpatient procedure led to blood poisoning and the double amputation of both of her legs. The medical error has completely changed her life: she can no longer work, she is struggling to raise her young daughter, and she is now facing a divorce.

The woman, Stacey Galette, says that she visited Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York, in 2009 for a minor gynecological procedure that should have been simple. Instead, Galette suffered from blood poisoning, perhaps caused by a perforation in her intestine during the medical procedure. The infection led to gangrene, which spread up her body and resulted in an emergency amputation of both of her legs above her knees.

Galette, who used to be medical technician, says that she has been extremely angry and depressed since the New York medical mistake drastically changed her life. She is no longer able to make a living and support her family. She is no longer able to run or play with her daughter – or to get around anywhere easily. In addition, the stress of the medical emergency and disability has brought an end to her marriage. For the rest of her life, she will be either confined to a wheelchair or to two prosthetic legs. She will also need ongoing assistance and medical care.

A spokesperson for the hospital has told reporters that they do not comment on cases in which medical malpractice litigation is pending.
