Millions Of Eggs Recalled After Salmonella Outbreak

Posted on Sep 20, 2010

A total of 380 million eggs have been recalled after an outbreak of salmonella food poisoning across much of the country. While hospitals can expect about 50 cases of salmonella each week, the recent sale of tainted eggs have increased those numbers to 200 cases. In addition, food safety experts say that large numbers of people who are struck down with food borne illnesses don’t visit the hospital and that thousands of people have likely been affected by the bad eggs.

The eggs were from a company called Wright County Egg located in Galt, Iowa. The egg producers have long been targeted by food regulators, who sited the owner, Jack DeCoster, for a number of issues, including poor work conditions, use of illegal immigrants, worker harassment, unsafe work environment, and environmental issues.

The eggs – which were produced in five different plants – were sold in a number of states across the country including New York under a number of different brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, Kemps, James Farms, Glenview and Pacific Coast.

Salmonella in eggs has been an issue for consumers for several decades – but this most recent recall is the largest that the country has seen in years. Unfortunately, new federal regulations that are expected to significantly curb the appearance of salmonella in our stores and restaurants has not yet gone into effect.

Salmonella can cause vomiting, fever, stomach pains, nausea, and other digestive issues. While no deaths have been reported regarding the most recent tainted egg recall, the very young, the very old, and the sick could suffer serious consequences from contracting the food-borne illness.
