More Than 10,000 People Per Year Killed from Texting, Talking and Driving

Posted on Dec 08, 2011

Researchers from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Fernando Wilson and Jim Stimpson, discovered that 16,000 people died from texting or talking while driving between 2001 and 2007.  This is equivalent to about 10,000 people per year, although more recent statistics show that the number of texting related deaths are on the rise each year as more people get phones with texting capabilities.  In fact, the University researchers estimate that the number of deaths by texting or talking on the phone while driving increase 19% for every million new cell phone subscribers.

Enforcement Problems

Despite knowing the dangers of distracted driving, and knowing that many states have banned using cell phones while driving, people continue to use phones behind the wheel.  It’s a problem of enforcement – unlike drunk driving, where a test can reveal whether or not a driver had been drinking before getting in the car; unless a cop is lucky enough to see a driver texting while driving, it’s a difficult issue to enforce.  Very few tickets are written for texting while driving, yet the number of car accidents have not decreased since states started banning cell phone use while driving.
