Following a horrific commercial bus crash in the Bronx that left 15 passengers dead, New York officials have cracked down on commercial bus drivers who are driving after using fraudulent means to obtain their commercial driving license. The driver in the fatal crash, Ophadell Williams, was found to have lied on his drivers’ license application. Now some believe that he was speeding and driving recklessly in the moments before the crash while others say that he was fatigued and falling asleep.
This week, the New York Police Department arrested 11 drivers, including multiple MTA employees, in the area who also lied during the licensing process. Some had falsified vital information on their license applications while others used false identities. Police say that they will continue to investigate commercial bus drivers and make further arrests. At the same time, NY police have issues over 150 tickets and citations to bus drivers speeding and breaking other rules of the road.
In addition to the arrests, the New York Department of transportation also conducted a surprise inspection of buses and bus drivers from across the state, removing a further 124 bus drivers from their positions and taking 96 buses off of the roads. The transportation department conducted over 1,000 different inspections after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo asked state officials to crack down after the NT bus accident made national headlines.
Two passengers who were injured in the Bronx bus accident have already filed personal injury lawsuits against the bus company involved with the crash, saying that the company was negligent when hiring drivers.
