A Manhattan nurse is suing New York’s Roosevelt Hospital after she says she was fired for exposing a fatal medical mistake.
A triage nurse, Danna Novak was on duty in August of 2009 when a regular of the emergency room, 51-year-old Daniel Iverson, once again entered the hospital. The man, an alcoholic who had a prosthetic leg and who was confined to a wheelchair, would often come into the hospital complaining of pain or wanting to rest. This night, however, he said that he had taken a dangerous dose of morphine in an attempt to commit suicide.
Novak began treating the man and took his blood pressure before another nurse stopped her, saying that the homeless man was faking the suicide attempt – despite the man’s low blood pressure and past attempts at taking his own life. The nurse told Iverson he would have to wait for a doctor, and he wheeled out of the emergency room and back into the streets. Later that day, he was found dead of an alcohol and morphine overdose. When the family was told about the man’s death, the hospital did not mention he had been in the emergency room just hours before and did not receive treatment.
When Novak tried to report the alleged medical malpractice incident to the hospital’s medical director, nothing happened. Soon after, she was told to quit and then was fired, allegedly for leaving patients unattended. She believes that it was for trying to expose the hospital’s deadly medical error.
