NY Worker Saved From Fall By Safety Harness

Posted on Oct 28, 2010

A construction worker was saved from serious injury and possibly death when a safety harness caught him during a fall from a building.

According to the college newspaper Pipe Dream, a worker in his twenties was doing roofing work at Binghamton University in Vestal, New York, when he slipped and fell. Luckily, his safety equipment was in place and functioning properly, breaking his fall and preventing serious injury. He was taken from the roof by emergency response workers in a stair chair and then transported by ambulance to the Binghamton General Hospital for evaluation. He was release after treatment later that day.

Contractor LeChase of Rochester and subcontractor Apple Roofing of Syracuse both said that safety is very important and that they were pleased that the harness was in place and used correctly. Work on the new constructions, Newing Residential Community buildings, did not stop on the day of the fall. It is unclear if the worker who fell has returned to work yet or if he suffered any long-term injuries that would prevent him to returning to his job. The name of the worker was not released to the public.

In June, six employees of Apple Roofing were injured at a nearby Binghamton University building when scaffolding collapsed. The Occupational Safety and Hazard Association (OSHA) is still investigating the cause of that construction worker accident.

About 30,000 construction worker slip and fall injuries occur every year in the United States.
