One Construction Worker Killed, 3 Injured In Queens Cinderblock Wall Accident

Posted on Jan 27, 2011

One New York construction worker has been killed and three others are being treated for serious injuries following the collapse of a cinderblock wall at a construction site in Queens.

According to the Associated Press and the New York Fire Department, a 26-year-old construction worker was killed in the wall collapse while three fellow workers are being treated for fractures and other fall trauma at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens.

The men were constructing a five-story building on Queens Boulevard in Elmhurst, Queens when an 18-foot-tall cinderblock wall fell over. Two of the men were on top of the wall during the construction site accident while two others were on scaffolding set up against the wall. The two men on the top of the wall were able to ride the structure down to the ground, while the two men on the scaffolding were trapped under the rubble and felt the full force of the falling wall. Other construction workers on the site rushed to free the two workers from the rubble, aided by emergency workers who arrived just minutes after the construction accident took place.

It is unclear what caused the wall to collapse or if any construction worker safety regulations were violated. The accident, which occurred at just after 9:30 AM on Monday, January 10, is under investigation. The building was to have ground floor commercial space and four stories of residential apartments.
