It is common knowledge that those working in the construction industry are at an increased risk of injury on the job. Construction workers face hazards in their day-to-day jobs that most other employees do not have to worry about. Accidents involving falls, injuries from equipment issues and other safety problems go hand-in-hand with construction work. Unfortunately, it is not only the construction workers who must pay close attention to their work environment as reported by Downtown Express.
From a recent report published by DowntownExpress.com, "Just hours before Mayor Michael Bloomberg's afternoon press conference at 4 World Trade Center on Mon., May 2, a piece of rebar fell from the 13th floor of the tower and struck the hand of a 14-year-old boy". It is reported that a four foot iron rod managed to fall through a gab measuring one to two inches in a platform used by construction workers working on the exterior of the building.
Tishman Construction in charge of overseeing the construction of the skyscraper provided this statement, "We deeply regret the incident that occurred last week. Our teams have identified the problems, and we have taken all steps to make sure they don't happen again."
This incident which resulted in the 14 year old boy being treated at the Engine 10 Firehouse for a bruise on his palm, has raised concerns about the safety of pedestrians around construction sites.
If construction workers are at an increased risk of injury from on-site hazards, it stands to reason those on the ground may also be at an increased risk. Despite safety precautions in place, the fact remains that pedestrians on the ground are vulnerable to objects or even workers falling from heights in addition to other hazards common on construction sites.
Increased safety measures must be considered when pedestrian traffic is exposed to construction site hazards to reduce the risk of injury to those on the ground.
