Sam Friedlander Ends the Lives of his Family and Himself

Posted on Oct 25, 2011

A quiet community near Route 35, where homes are valued in the $800,000 to $1 million range north of Cross River Reservoir was the setting of a disturbing murder-suicide last week. When Amy Friedlander's business partner called the police to check on the welfare of her friend who she hadn't heard from, NY State Troopers went to the home at 2 Lambert Ridge Road in Cross River, NY and discovered four dead bodies on Tuesday, October 18th.

State Police Maj. Michael Kopy announced around 9pm that it appeared to be a murder suicide. The bodies of Amy Friedlander, age 46, Sam Friedlander, age 50, and children Molly, age 10 and Gregory, age 8, were found in various rooms of the home. The children were shot in their beds with no sign of struggle; Amy was found dead on her side of the bed in her bedroom after being clubbed with a broken table leg, and Sam was found in the basement having shot himself in the head.

The couple was in the middle of a divorce, and were due to appear in court for a child support hearing. The couple was sharing the house, although Sam had been sleeping in the fourth bedroom of the home while the marriage was being dissolved.

The family home was listed for sale for $799,000, according to several real estate websites. There had been no previous domestic violence cases reported from the home, according to police, other than a verbal disagreement in 2006 between Amy and Sam. No charges were filed at the time.
