After this weekend’s Staten Island Ferry crash, many of the injured passengers are contacting New York personal injury lawyers and planning on filing accident injury lawsuits. Among those pursing injury lawsuits is 50-year-old Flabio Silva, a construction worker from Queens who says that his back was seriously injured when the boat crashed into a dock on Saturday.
While most of the three dozen people who were injured in the boat accident suffered only minor injuries, some aboard the boat want payment for their medical bills and other damages. The Barberi crashed into the same dock in 2003, killing 11 people and injuring many other passengers. In that case, the captain of the boat was found to be on painkillers, extremely fatigued, and unconscious.
The ferry accident took place last weekend, when investigators say that the boat suffered a mechanical failure that made it unable to stop as it was docking. The National Transportation Safety Board interviewed the captain of the ferry and others on board and determined that they took all of the correct steps in order to maximize safety and minimize injury – precautions were taken, no one was distracted, and no one was not performing their duties.
In fact, the crew of the ferry are now being lauded for acting calming, clearing stairs, and warning passengers to brace for the coming impact. The New York Department of Transportation is not sure how much the accident will cost, or whether the boat should be taken out of rotation altogether considering its age and mechanical issues.
