Staten Island Woman Sues Doctor For Botched Breast Implant Surgery

A Staten Island woman is suing her doctor after she says her cosmetic surgery and breast augmentation ended in medical malpractice. The Staten Island doctor who performed the surgery puts forth that she knew and understood the risks of the procedure before it took place.

In March 2003, Maria Alaimo received breast implants from Grasmere plastic surgeon Dr. Keith S. Berman. The operation left Alaimo wil a “double-bubble” deformity” that left her with the appearance of having four breasts. Her botched surgery ultimately led the woman to divorce, depression, and suicidal thoughts. In the wake of the surgical error, the woman as brought a New York City medical malpractice lawsuit on the doctor, who said that the woman ignored the risks of her cosmetic surgery. Alaimo is seeking $5 million in damages.

When she took the stand in a New York court last week, Alamio described the shame, embarrassment, and depression she felt after the surgery. She wouldn’t allow her husband to see her naked and even moved into another bedroom. She said that the surgery finally led to a divorce with her husband, who she described as a good man that she pushed away after the medical error. In addition, she talked about her loss of self-esteem after the surgery transformed her breasts into swollen, unrecognizable lumps. The jury was shown a picture of her deformed breasts.

While the doctor said that he reviewed possible complications, Alamio said that although some possibilities were discussed, she was never told about a “double-bubble” deformity.

This NYC medical malpractice lawsuit was heard by New York State Claims Judge Alan Marin.
