Toyota Could Face A Second Big Recall Involving Stalling Engines

Posted on Sep 21, 2010

Just months after facing its largest recall in history, car giant Toyota could be facing another recall issue, this time involving engine problems in several years of their Corolla model.

According tot he National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 1.1 million Corollas manufactured between 2005 and 2007 could suffer from a significant engine defect that leads to stalling while driving.

The NHTSA says that they have received over 1,100 reports from customers saying that their Toyota engine has stalled while they were driving without warning and apparently without reason. Although no deaths or injuries have been reported because of this stalling issue, both the mammoth car company and traffic safety officials worry that so many defective cars are on the road. While federal traffic safety authorities have not yet issued a recall on the Toyotas containing defective engines, they have launched an investigation into the problem. In the meantime, Toyota may engage in its own voluntary recall of the affected vechiles.

Earlier this year, Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles that suffered from accelerator issues after a number of accident took place when cars suddenly accelerated out of the driver’s control. Shortly before that, Toyota recalled a number of other cars after drivers struggled with defective floor mats that could become jammed near the accelerator. This recall occurred only after several fatal accidents were reported involving the dangerous floor mats.
