On July 22nd, a tractor trailer accident left one killed, 2 severely injured and 30 passengers injured when a Matrix Expedited Services tractor trailer and tour bus collided on the New York State thruway between Syracuse and Rochester. When the bus was hit from behind, it burst into flames. The driver of the tractor trailer was killed and at least 30 passengers on the bus were injured.
The bus had pulled off the road for mechanical problems and was returning to the driving lane. State police officers are unsure whether the bus was up to speed at the time of the tractor trailer collision, or if it was still partially in the shoulder of the road. The bus did still have it's emergency flashers on when the accident occurred.
Sargent Jacob Perkins, on leave from Fort Drum for just 90 minutes, saw the accident and quickly pulled off the road to help passengers get off the burning bus. He went into the bus several times to help passengers get to safety.
The driver of the tour bus out of Ontario has a valid Canadian license, but a suspended New York license from speeding tickets he received in 2003 and 2006. The driver was ticketed for driving with an expired license. The bus itself had recently been inspected, and the American Bus Association said the company employing the driver had a top three grade during it's most recent federal inspection in 2007.
The driver of the tractor trailer was reportedly a professional driver with a strong safety record, according to his employer, Matrix Expedited Services.
