A 14-year-old student at The Ursuline School recently committed suicide, prompting two statements from the school as well as a press release from the Yonkers police department.
The school’s second statement, from Ursuline School Principal Eileen Davidson, stated that the school is grieving the loss of the student, Eira Maghuyop. The statement described its close-knit status and the love that the student body had for Maghuyop and the love she had for the school. The staff is taking measures to help students deal with the loss of the student and allow them to mourn their loss.
The school is highly concerned about the rumors that spread after the death of Maghuyop. Some new outlets reported that the suicide was caused by bullying at the school. According to the principal’s statement, the Yonkers Police Department investigated the bullying allegations and found that the allegations had no basis.
The school thanked the local community for its support and reiterated its support for grieving students who need counseling and other assistance from peers and staff members. The school is providing a personal development program and peer mediation to help students deal with the tragedy. The school also uses its Teenangels program of trained teens that teach other students about cyberbullying and Internet safety and how to prevent problems online.
